Conductor & Artistic Staff
Richard Long Youth Symphony conductor
is a native Oregonian
and attended the Oberlin Conservatory and the University Of Oregon School Of
Music. He began teaching in the Eugene Public Schools in 1974 and has taught
band and orchestra at elementary, middle and high school levels. He currently
teaches orchestra at and is Head of Performing Arts Department at South Eugene
High School. Richard was appointed conductor of the Eugene Youth Symphony in
1975 and is currently the Program Director for Arts Umbrella. He is a member
of the Eugene Symphony and was awarded the Arts and Letters Award by the Eugene
Arts Foundation in 1988.
David Chinburg Junior Orchestra
holds degrees in music education from the University
of Oregon and cello performance from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. David is currently employed as the band and orchestra
teacher at Roosevelt Middle School. In addition to his conduction and teaching duties, David serves as principal cellist in the Eugene
Symphony and performs with the Oregon Bach Festival and Oregon Festival of American Music. When David is not involved in music
activities, he shares the country life with his family on a twelve-acre farm in southwest Eugene.
Forrest Moyer Little Symphony Co-conductor
has dedicated his
life to performing and teaching music. As a double bassist, he has been a long
time member of the Eugene Symphony Orchestra, Oregon Bach Festival, Oregon Festival
of American Music, Eugene Opera, and the Portland Opera. Forrest has played
in many jazz concerts and groups and has also recorded and toured with Mason
Williams since 1984, including performances with the Sacramento Symphony, Oregon
Symphony abd United States Air Force Band in Washington D.C. Forrest is the
orchestra teacher at Sheldon and Churchill High Schools and Spencer Butte Middle
School in Eugene and has taught double bass at the University of Oregon.
Chet Peterson Eugene Little Symphony Co-conductor
Chet graduated from the University of Idaho where he was principal clarinet for four years in the university band and orchestra.
After teaching for eight years in Idaho where he was 2nd clarinet in the Boise Symphony, Chet and his family moved to Eugene.
He received his masters degree at the University of Oregon and has taught band, orchestra, choir and humanities classes in the
Eugene Public Schools for 36 years. In his retirement, Chet continues to perform with the Eugene Symphonic Band, his own woodwind
quartet, LCC Band, and summer musicals as well as conducts the Eugene Community Orchestra. Chet is looking forward to joining Arts
Umbrella and to working with the Little Symphony.
Ruth Root Encore Strings Conductor
began playing the violin
when she was in 4th grade in Long Beach, California. She studied violin pedagogy
and performance with Bill Hunt and Lawrence Maves and graduated from Pacific
Christian College with a B.A. degree in education in 1967. Ruth was awarded
a music specialist teaching credential from the University of Oregon in 1988.
Currently she teaches general music at McCornack Elementary in Eugene and is
a member of the DéGani String Quartet.
Ruth is also a member of the Delta Epsilon Chi Honor Society and is the founding
president of the Oregon Children’s Choir.
Peggy Rubinstein String Academy
earned her Bachelor of Music
Education at the Indiana University and her Masters of Music in Violin Performance
at the University of Oregon, and has taught string classes at McCornack Elementary
School, Kennedy Middle School and the Waldorf School for many years. She is
also a member of the Eugene Symphony and has a large private studio of violin
students.
Lauralie Kallinen String Academy
earned her Bachelor's of
Music in cello performance at Lawrence University and her Master’s of Music
in cello performance and music education at the University of Oregon. Lauralie
has taught string classes in the Eugene Public Schools and the Waldorf School
for several years and is a cello teacher for the Suzuki Strings Program. Lauralie
also has a large private studio of cello students.
Sarah Kreger String Academy
graduated with a master's degree
in viola performance and string pedagogy from the University of Oregon in 2002.
She currently teaches violin and viola through the Suzuki Strings Program and
performs with local orchestras.
